Tips for Sexual Well-Being

By Evelyn Resh, MPH, RN, CNM

  • The hardest person to talk to, and with, about having sex is your partner.
  • Both partners have to commit to improving their sexual relationship in order for change to occur.
  • Sexual intimacy is not just about sexual intercourse. It's about a loving connection between partners.
  • Our sexual appetites, interests and capabilities naturally change and shift over time. This is related to our physical and emotional health and all the events occurring in our lives.
  • Undivided attention - both the ability to provide and receive attention is a strong aphrodisiac for women
  • Anger toward your partner and/or the world around you is a major impediment to having sexual relations.
  • If you have children, don't let them dominate your household and family. You and your partner should come first most of the time.
  • Make arrangements on a regular basis to spend time alone with your partner. Go out to dinner, take a walk or go away overnight as often as you can.
  • Make sex a priority just like regular exercise, healthy eating habits and plenty of sleep. Satisfying sex takes effort, planning and thought.
